The MAFI Initiative

The Mine Action Finance Initiative (MAFI) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to delivering innovative financing solutions for the mine action sector. Our aim is to grow the level of funding to reduce the risk of mines and explosive hazards in conflict-affected countries.

MAFI works with mine-affected countries to identify mine action funding needs and develop innovative finance models to address them. MAFI also works with governments, donors, multilateral organisations, banks, private sector and NGOs to grow understanding and share learning around innovative finance.

Sasha Wiese

Co-Founder & Global Head of Finance & Risk Management

Sasha (Alexander) is a sustainable finance expert with close to 20 years of experience in structuring nature and climate related financial solutions and mechanisms across the globe.

He has worked as an advisor to Ministries of Economy, Finance and Environment in Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Mongolia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Costa Rica and Fiji, as well as with international institutions (UNDP, UNEP-FI, WB and EIB) and municipalities, around nature, climate and SDG finance. 

Sasha has extensive expertise in the agri-food sector, working on agricultural fund structuring and project selection in the agricultural sector across multiple continents (Latin America, Southeast Asia and the EU).

He is also experienced in sovereign debt structuring, especially debt for nature/climate Swaps, SDG Bonds, Green and Blue Bonds, and Sustainability linked bonds and has extensive expertise in sustainability standards and guidelines.

Camille is Co-Founder and Director of Symbio Impact Ltd, a sustainable financing and strategy consultancy. Her experience is in senior leadership, developing and delivering complex organisational strategy, impact monitoring and evaluation, development finance and resource mobilisation strategies.

She has over 11 years’ experience working with the mine action sector, most recently as Director of Strategy for The HALO Trust until 2022. She has pioneered the exploration of large-scale innovative financing solutions for the mine action sector and is a member of the Humanitarian Finance Forum. 

Camille has lived and worked across Europe, South and South East Asia, Africa and Latin America and holds a BA(Hons) and an MSc from the University of Bath in International Development Economics.

Chris Loughran

Co-Founder & Global Head of Mine Action Governance

Chris is Co-Founder of Symbio Impact Ltd, a sustainable financing and strategy consultancy. He has over 20 years’ experience in the not-for-profit and public sectors, including at senior leadership level. His expertise is in disarmament processes, mine action policy and diplomacy.

He has extensive experience in strategy governance and organisational change, policy and public affairs, and income diversification involving the private sector. He Specialises in the development and implementation of policy, advocacy and campaign strategies that inform decision makers and influence positive change.

Chris has lived and worked in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and worked extensively in Asia. He holds a first class degree from the University of Oxford and a Masters from the School of Oriental & African Studies in London.
